more of this less of that

I want to take more adventures. Ideally big ones (the one in mind currently is the trip to Thailand which I recently discovered, but even small day adventures would be nice. I want to go to Alcatraz, I want to go camping, I want to go for a hike, I want to go to caves, I want to go to Half Moon Bay. I want I want I want. I have none...

Lately my days are filled with school work, and work work. In between I find time to grab lunch or dinner with friends, maybe a movie or two, but other than that I am too exhausted to do much else. I am hoping things will wind down, or I will wind up.

I am restless and frustrated. The frustration is over the same 'ole same'ole. We can talk and talk until we can talk no more, yet nothing has changed, atleast not yet. But I am blissfully hopeful, atleast I am trying to be.

Thoughts of the future are enveloping me and taking me on daydream trips to nowhere.

I have been working out more, walking more, wii-fitting more (because in all honesty I am lazy). I do this all in my own time. Me time. Me and Ampersand actually, as she likes to have righttherewithyounospaceinbetween kind of time, usually when it is least convenient, yet so sweet.

I finished another book. You Are Not A Stranger Here. It was a fun and easy read.

Things coming up:
Persian New Year
Jonah in SF
New Tattoo
Midterms
Jewelry Party
School Advising Mtg

A weird mix of past present and future melding into the next few weeks. Where do you stand?

you're an ocean made coaster, ready to pop.

The past few days have been a whirlwind. A test here, a practical there, a midterm over yonder...and that's just in my one little world of school, not in my whole universe of life.

I had someone pass away that I had become really close with at work. I know it is a job and I am there as an employee, but you cannot help but become attached. Her family was extremely close with her, and therefore became close with me and my fellow co-workers through their daily visits and what not. Her decline was fast, thought not entirely unexpected. I was dealing with her and her illness and her changes from one day to the next well, but when I had to address the family on one of the final days, the daughter I had become closest to hugged me and muttered "Thank you" through a wall of tears...that's when I couldn't keep my composure, and I left some of my own tears fall. It was a nice gathering of family and friends for her final moments, and I felt so at peace for her.

The day before all that happened, I thought too much, realized some, and concluded others. My mind wanders, I often have to remind myself to reel it back in, back to here and now. The power of suggestion is remarkable, especially when that suggestion comes from within.

This past week I also took some time to really get things in order for the next few years. Applications will be due come September, and I have one of my final advising meetings coming up. I would like to say that I have a plan, that I know what I want, as of now I can say it a million times, but it won't make sense until it happens. I need security more than ever, to know that I am not the only one with a paddle in this sinking ship.

Although my work can be depressing, it is one of the happiest places I can be. Most days, although hectic and exhausting, I cannot imagine being anywhere else. I love the patients and families, their spirits and hope, their love and understanding...it's all contagious.

Speaking of contagious. I am sick. Again.

Some fun\ny work stuff:

One patient and I were feeding birds outside and she said "Oh! I am going to get them" and then proceeded to wheel herself away from them. When I told her "No, no, you need to come back over here, they are behind you now." She shrieked "OH NO! Then the grass will get me!" and kept going.

While playing BINGO, I always sit one of our more confused patients next to me to listen and watch (and in turn, so I can watch her, as she likes to eat flowers, poker chips, napkins, etc) She reached out and stroked my arm and said "Aww, How DELICIOUS!" When I looked at her, she had on the biggest smile I had ever seen.

Today, I walked in to work to find one patient wheeling around with someone else's pictures that she had stolen from their room. Later, I found her in the person's bed, refusing to get out, claiming it was hers.

At lunch a while ago I had one patient trying to eat a yellow flower with a piece of bread. After countless attempts to get her to put it down, I finally realized, she must want butter, as butter is yellow, and so it the flower. Once I put some butter on her bread, she gave me back the half-bitten off flower.

Everyday is different, as different as each of them. You never know when you will walk in one of their rooms and find them eating something they shouldn't, or throwing something at you, or just sitting there, staring at you... naked. But, nonetheless, I love them anyway.

In between work, school, and everything that comes with it, I have been reading "You are Not a Stranger Here." They are short stories, almost excerpts of peoples lives written by Adam Haslett. I am loving it. Most have a dark little twist, or some other hook to draw you in. I have also been listening to my iPod on shuffle, endlessly. I enjoy the surprise. It's a surprise that I can control and am prepared for, since I know what is on there. I enjoy said surprises.

Sometimes...

...the past pops up into the present. It's not always mine. But it affects me in such a way.

Today it made me feel physically sick, nauseatingly dizzy. I suppose it was my own fault in some ways. In other ways, I yearn for the very same...

Somedays I wish you never invented.

I wish little things like this were always as happy:

Edit: Old ladies that pinch my butt remind me, that it's going to be okay. Sometimes... Work is all I need to make it through.

domino effect

Birthday has come and gone. It was mellow. Dinner and ice cream at ICI with family and friends. The actual day of my birth was spent in bed, nursing my cough and cold. I got some really sweet cards and little presents. My mom always knows how to make me cry the happiest of tears.

We went and saw Alkaline Trio and Cursive in the city last Thursday. The crowd was funny, semi-annoying. Alkaline was good, I love them both, but Cursive killed it. Their set was full of all of my favorite songs and their energy was the highest I have ever seen them. Far is this Thursday along with Stomacher, a band that has come highly recommended by friends. I am excited for this week to be bookend in shows.

I like crafts. Usually they consists of collages. I love to cut words and pictures out of magazines, newspapers, postcards, posters, etc. and glue them all together to represent someone\something. Today I made a frame out of dominoes. I haven't made the backing yet, but here it is. I like the simple black and white.

This weekend we are heading up to Tahoe with my mom and sister. Should be a nice little getaway. A chance to relax by a fire, surrounded by calm white and those I love. I'm looking forward to it.

I want to read. I finished a Approaching Neverland, which surpassed all of my expectations and then some. I am almost done with Book 5, the story has picked up speed once again, and I have no idea what is going to happen next. Then onto Book 6. And I am searching for a new one to start. I think I am going to read You Are Not a Stranger Here.

What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?

boxes of friends and endless races

Classes galore. I am feeling productive and proud of myself for having a 30 hour work week, plus a full class load, picking up nannying jobs along the way, and still, occasionally, finding time for myself...

At both of my jobs, I watch my patients and kids make friends so easily, like they are collecting them all up in a little box. And this got me thinking… When we were young, our best friend was determined by us liking the same food, or T.V. show or color, and the same seems to go for the elderly patients I work with. Just the other day I made a comment to two women sitting next to eachother “Oh! You both have on the same color purple!” Immediately they became the best of friends and will tell you so when asked. So, what happened in the in-between years? When was it not okay to like people so easily? When did it become cool to do just the opposite, and make your friend’s lives miserable through backstabbing and other drama-filled teenage years? But never fear… the good times come back apparently. The times when you can sit down, and smile at someone, and be friends. Maybe it’s like a friendship circle of sorts.

Lately I have been trying to run\walk the frustration out of me. At times I feel this eminent sense of ‘stuck’ overwhelming me. Most of the time, it’s the little things adding up, but lately it seems like I have bigger things on my mind. And I’m the only one.

((my voice is just an echo. what does it take to get ready? why am I always the first to the finish line when it’s not suppose to be race? the short rope keeps getting shorter. when will the tension break it in two?))

I love this little ball of fur on my lap.

safeway

I came to an epiphany the other day while shopping at safeway. It was a day where I actually got dressed. I don’t mean this, in the sense that on some days I go without clothing, but rather, that I took care in choosing the clothes I put on for the day. I was complimented several times by the “regulars,” the people I see day in and day out as they seem to always be working when I go in. I realized as I walked through the aisles that these people seem to know me best out of all the people in town, discounting those I live with, family, etc. They have seen all sides of me, and continue to see me on the good days and the bad. They see me when I am sick and come in for some Tylenol in the sweats, full of snot and feverish. They see me when I am dressed nice and stop in to pick up something to take to a party. They see me when I stop in after a run, a day at camp, a workout, and need something to drink. They see me when its just one of those days and all I want is some comfort food, and I want it now. And then, they see me when things seem to be going okay, it’s an okay kind of day and I’m just there, doing my thing. I think they have pretty much seen it all. Weird. For people that know nothing about me, they know me pretty well.

I have fallen in love with two little old ladies. They are spunky little things. One scoots her way around the facility, following me as I work, commenting on a world that resembles nothing of our own. The other knows exactly what she wants, when she wants it, even when she can’t have it, and she knows that too. They are fun, and funny, and completely content in their own little worlds, which is definitely not ours. Unfortunately I had to transfer one of them to the hospital on Sunday, I hope she is back by tomorrow, they make my days go by faster.

I bought myself a birthday present, a Wii. I had told people for a while now, and several holidays have passed, with no such present. I suppose I am too old, now I get practical things like underwear and tires; both of which are important and needed on a daily basis, which I suppose is for the better. Meh, I’ll buy my own senseless fun.

School started again. Class at 8am, which means getting to school by 7:45 to find parking, get to class, get situated, and all that. I am not a morning person. This class seems like it should be good. I like the teacher thus far, which is more than I can say for last semester’s class. I am trying my best to stay motivated.

Is it only for me because there’s a “to” and “from"?

when hummingbirds fail to hum

Ugh, what a week. It was full of frustration, schedule mishaps, unhealthiness and overall stress. I am hoping that this rain will wash that all away and bring a new fresh, clean start.

Since starting work, and seeing and being around and exposed to some of the things I have been, I have really noticed my sense of humor and general outlook on things\life\people. My mom says it’s tainted. I say it’s survival in all the right ways.

The patients I work with have some of the worst circumstances imaginable, and if we didn’t laugh every once in a while, we wouldn’t be able to keep such an upbeat environment for them. It’s hard to go to work everyday and face such horrible odds for these people you become attached to. You know what the outcome will be, and yet you still have that sliver of “but just maybe” looming in the back of your mind.

With all of that being said, I have decided to write down and keep some of the funny\odd things they say to me. Here are the first few:

“You have nice teeth… Are they for sale?!”

“I will not drink that, It’s MEXICAN!” (referring to her milk, which had Chinese characters on the carton might I add)

“You look nice. But I know you’re not,.”

“My roommate called my a faggot because I turned off the T.V., that means thief right? I’m no thief!!!”

All in a days work…
